Behind the scenes

The film's director, Michael Schroeder, was having a hard time finding an actor who could convey the robotic nature of a cyborg while still having a compelling onscreen presence. Angelina Jolie fit the bill so perfectly that the director was willing to do whatever it took to get her cast for the movie, which was set to include a topless scene. Rather than lose the scene, it was decided that Jolie would be legally emancipated from her parents, Marcheline Bertrand and actor Jon Voight, so she could be considered an adult. This was not a stretch as Jolie was already living on her own with her boyfriend and had, according to Schroeder, finished her final two years of high school "in five months." It was a plan to which Angelina Jolie agreed and the legal process was undertaken to have a judge agree to the filing. Once that was done, the young star was considered an adult and the hurried production schedule could move forward. For his part, Schroeder felt the move made sense as Jolie was
"the most mature 17-year-old" he had ever met.
